We are a Brussels based office for architecture and urbanism established in 2013 by Jan Vermeulen. Our studio thrives on the extensive expertise of a talented team of collaborators from Belgium and abroad. Led by Jan Vermeulen, who brings over 20 years of experience across the Netherlands, United Kingdom, France, and Belgium, we undertake a diverse array of projects including master planning, public buildings, office buildings, collective residential projects, and private dwellings and interiors.
The work of our studio is recognised for its sustainable and inclusive approach. Our projects have been internationally published and recently been awarded the New European Bauhaus Award 2022 and the Belgian Building Award 2022.
We have developed an approach based on precision, craftsmanship and eye for detail. Our projects are layered and kaleidoscopic. We look for meanings hidden in the spatial form, but also in the making of this form. We are looking for an architecture that serves and loves people. We commit to a diplomatic approach that generates architecture that feels familiar but nevertheless unlocks new spatial conditions, sometimes modest, sometimes bold.
We see the challenges of our time as a breeding ground for an inclusive, feasible, economic, and sustainable architecture. Our architecture does not grow in a far utopic future but is conceived in today’s society so we can live better in the society of tomorrow.
Our practice offers comprehensive and responsive design services including master planning, feasibility studies, concept designs, planning applications, tender documentation, and site supervision during execution until completion.
We have a track record in developing successful designs for public sector projects. We strive to produce a sustainable architecture that positively transforms the experiences of its users and the wider community, prioritising long-term benefits over short-term rewards.
We love to work with developers, cooperations and social housing companies on ambitious collective housing projects. We advocate for densification strategies to provide affordable, high-quality housing within a robust socio-spatial framework that fosters enduring communities.
We enjoy designing tailor made projects for private clients. We are committed to creating bespoke architecture that generates timeless places with a strong identity on reasonable budgets.
Teamwork lays at the basis of our approach. We seek to build lasting relationships with clients, colleagues, consultants, contractors, governments, users, and residents. Our studio is open to various forms of collaboration with clients and contractors, and we are often a driving force in alliances with fellow architects, both in Belgium and abroad. One notable collaboration was Studio Thys Vermeulen, with whom we successfully completed several projects.
Over the years, our studio has had the privilege of working with a diverse range of clients, each contributing to the evolution of our architectural and urbanistic vision. From ambitious public sector projects to diverse residential projects and bespoke private commissions, we have consistently aimed to create places that resonate with the needs of our clients, their users and communities. Below is a selected list of our clients who have trusted us to bring their visions to life.
